ABOUT US

Dawn Gaines: Founder, President

Dawn, an accomplished professional with a degree in Political Science and Public Relations from the University of Memphis, embarked on her journey in education as a substitute teacher with Memphis City Public Schools. Driven by a profound passion for community impact, she took a bold step by founding a local non-profit dedicated to addressing the educational needs of Memphis students.

In 2013, Dawn transitioned to a full-time role with TNTP, a national non-profit, where her contributions have been nothing short of transformative. Her impactful work on the Memphis City/Shelby County Public Schools staffing contract showcased her expertise in guiding principals on strategic staffing practices, with a specific focus on high-need schools in the bottom 5% in Tennessee. Dawn's dedication ensured that all teacher positions were filled before the first day of school, setting a standard for effective staffing solutions.

Expanding her role with TNTP, Dawn, now a Senior Manager, has become a driving force in various recruitment and selection projects. Her wealth of experience and expertise has played a pivotal role in shaping a national recruitment and cultivation strategy for TNTP's teacher and school leader preparation programs.

A standout achievement in Dawn's career is her instrumental role in designing and launching TNTP’s Black Educators Excellence Cohort. This innovative program significantly increased the recruitment of aspiring Black teachers within TNTP's Teaching Fellows programs. Dawn's passion for addressing diversity gaps in education aligns seamlessly with her commitment to dismantling barriers that disproportionately impact Black teachers entering and remaining in the classroom.

Dawn's journey reflects an intersection of hands-on teaching experience, a deep investment in the Memphis community, and meaningful contributions to broader educational initiatives. This unique blend equips her with a well-rounded perspective, making her an invaluable asset in her professional endeavors.

Dawn is an enthusiastic sports fanatic, with a special passion for cheering on the Memphis Grizzlies and the University of Memphis basketball teams. Beyond the realm of sports, she finds joy in traveling, attending Broadway shows, playing golf alongside her husband Brad, and enjoying live concerts – mainly 80’s Boy Bands.
